ChatGPT and How We Learn
Introduction:
ChatGPT has taken the world by storm. This Artificial Intelligence (“AI”) tool possesses a wide array of abilities ranging from the ability to compose poetry to answering questions about historical events (currently with some degree of inaccuracy.) Most importantly—for education—ChatGPT has the ability to instantaneously draft an essay on a limitless number of topics. This has led to widespread discussion among educators about the use of ChatGPT in education, and whether it will bring positive or negative effects.

Instructions:
First, introduce students to the definition of pedagogy and some examples of it that you have recently utilized in your classroom. Next, heave students read Handout A–Article–RealClearEducation: With ChatGPT, Education May Never Be the Same and answer the following questions as they read.
- What are some activities that ChatGPT can accomplish outside of education? Within education?
- What are some shortcomings of ChatGPT?
- Why are some people optimistic about ChatGPT and its capabilities? Why are some people concerned?
Then lead a class discussion, using the below bullets as a starting point.
- Discuss modes of pedagogy that students currently use to learn. What do they like? What do they wish could change?
- How does the way that students learn currently differ from how their parents learned? How are they the same? How might the way students’ future children learn differ from contemporary learning?
- Is ChatGPT different than other innovations in education?
- Could you use Chat GPT to answer these questions? How would that impact you? How would it impact your class?
- How do you think ChatGPT will impact education? What are some positives and negatives?
Extension Activity:
Have students engage in debate over whether they believe ChatGPT should be incorporated into the classroom. Encourage students with differing opinions to engage in civil discourse on the topic.
