Throughout history, countries have used tariffs, or taxes on imported foreign goods. They typically argue that doing so is a way to raise revenue and to protect domestic manufacturers by making foreign goods more expensive. President-elect Donald Trump ran on a platform that called for raising tariffs. His recent victory has led to debates about the efficacy of such policies.  

Those who argue that the United States should increase tariffs on foreign goods claim that doing so will protect American industries from foreign competition from countries like China that are able to manufacture items at a lower price. They argue that raising tariffs will encourage companies to increase manufacturing in the United States, which will provide quality jobs for Americans. They may also argue that this reduction in reliance on foreign manufacturing is better for national security. Additionally, they contend that higher tariffs will provide the government with more revenue without needing to directly raise taxes on Americans. 

Those who argue that the United States should not increase tariffs on foreign goods argue that doing so will harm both the American economy as well as the global economy. They claim that raising tariffs will lead to other countries doing the same, leading to a “tariff war.” They argue this in turn will raise the cost of goods across the world, which will lead to fewer purchases and a global recession. They claim that other countries should be able to specialize in manufacturing to keep prices low for consumers. Additionally, they argue that higher tariffs are equal to a tax increase on all Americans, since they tend to lead to higher prices.
