Constitution Connection
The Constitution serves as the framework for the United States’ governing system and its laws. However, disagreements arise over how the wording of the Constitution should be interpreted. Some argue in favor of understanding the original intentions of the authors of the Constitution in order to best understand how to interpret the phrasing of the document. Others argue that the original intentions of the authors can be difficult to discern, and that the Constitution is a living document which should be flexibly adapted to fit the needs of U.S. society as it transitions throughout time. The disputes over how to interpret the Constitution impact numerous issues ranging from abortion to gun rights to religious liberty. As citizens in a self-governing society, it is our responsibility to civilly debate these questions from a constitutional standpoint in order to determine the best course of action for our country to take on modern issues.
