Should the United States Loosen its Immigration Laws?
Throughout our nation’s history, immigrants have come to the United States seeking to enjoy the economic opportunities and liberties our country has to offer. While the U.S. has accepted large numbers of immigrants for centuries, it has also imposed various restrictions on immigrants. Recently, an immense increase in immigration along the southern border and conflicts around the world, including in Afghanistan, Syria, and Ukraine, have again the important question of what immigration policy our country should follow.
Those who argue that the United States should loosen its immigration laws contend that our country has a humanitarian obligation to do so. They argue that there are millions of people in need of a new start and a stable place to live, and that they can find opportunities in the United States. They contend that immigrants benefit the United States in innumerable ways, and we should do all we can to promote more immigration.
Those who argue that the United States should not loosen its immigration laws contend that our country already grants citizenship to a large amount of people. They may also claim that increasing immigration could lead to native citizens struggling to find jobs as they compete with immigrants. Finally, they may contend that the United States must use its resources to do more to stop the flow of illegal immigration to uphold the rule of law.
So, what do you think? Should the United States loosen its immigration laws? Students may answer Yes, it should; No, it should not; or a nuanced answer in between! Be sure to submit your answer by 4/14 to have it be considered for this week’s competition.
