Parents have always had a role in their children’s education. In the past year, however, the subject of “book bans” in public schools has heated up as it has become a centerpiece in the ongoing “culture war.” Multiple states have enacted or are considering enacting laws related to what types of books can and can’t be allowed in schools, ensuring that it will be a much-discussed topic for the time to come. 

Those who argue that parents should have greater control over books in public schools argue that doing so will help parents have stricter oversight over what information their children are given access to. They contend that children are very susceptible, and that parents should have  the largest role in determining what books their children might read at school. 

Those who argue that parents should not have more control over books in public schools argue that to do so would lead to excessive suppression of books on a variety of topics. They claim that some parents would work to limit a variety of books—even classics—that hold views they disagree with or are uncomfortable around. They argue that in general, students should be allowed to engage with content freely as that is the best way for them to learn.  

So, what do you think? Should Parents Have Greater Control Over Books in Public Schools? Students can answer Yes, they should; No, they should not; or a nuanced answer in-between! Be sure to submit your answers by May 10th so that they have a chance to be considered for this week’s contest.
