In the landmark 2010 Supreme Court case Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission, the Court ruled that corporations and unions spending money on election ads is a form of speech protected by the First Amendment, however, debates over the influence of money in elections has continued as we begin another presidential election cycle, debates on this topic will only increase. 

Those who argue that greater limitations should be placed on election spending argue that large amounts of money in politics open the door for greater corruption. They claim it allows a small number of wealthy citizens to have a disproportionate influence in our political system. They contend that this reduces the trust that average citizens have in the government, which in turn negatively impacts the system as a whole. 

Those who argue that greater limitations should not be placed on election spending argue that doing so would violate the First Amendment. They claim that donating money is a form of political speech, and to create more restrictions would give the government the authority to restrict corporations, unions, and individuals from voicing their opinions. Additionally, they may argue that there are currently regulations on campaign financing, which are sufficient to ensure fair elections are held.
